Reggio Inspired Provocations in the Classroom

"A provocation in the Reggio Emilio approach is a deliberate display of irresistible loose household materials, exploration tools, and references that invite and inspire the children to be inquisitive, creative, and to solve a problem while they play.

We develop most provocations based on the emerging interests of the children. We pay close attention to their conversation and engagement in play because ultimately, we want to provide a relevant experience that is meaningful and familiar to them.

What makes provocations easy to create at home is authenticity. Instead of commercial plastic toys that you need to buy, our provocations derive from things that anyone can find at home or outdoors. Children can extend their investigation and exploration outside of school because anyone can replicate a provocation seen in the classroom. It’s a great open-ended teaching strategy that can truly happen anywhere."
